News & Magazine
The News / Magazine site type of Vendix Theme adds a top bar with the date and a Top Bar menu, published and updated date and time, a standfirst under the title, related news and a reading progress bar. With the Vendix plugin it also shows a breaking news band and view counts.
Top Bar
Show the date and the sections at the top of every page.
A top bar above the header shows the date and the Top Bar menu (Appearance → Menus). It appears with the theme header when it has something to show, and not on pages with a transparent header, which lie over the top of the page. The date and the menu have contrast on the light background, also on hover.
News Posts
Tell readers what is new and what changed.
News posts show the published and the updated date and time, and the standfirst (the excerpt) under the title. The standfirst, related news and the reading progress bar are on by default on news sites.
News cards use their own image sizes (640 × 360 and 1280 × 720), so lists load sharp images of the right size. Images uploaded before the type was chosen get the new sizes when their thumbnails are regenerated.
The post list layouts, the post head and the reading options of Blog & Posts work on news sites too.
Editing Experience
Write in the editor with the look readers see.
On news sites, posts are edited in the block editor with the larger reading text and upright quotes of the front end. On Arabic, Persian and Urdu sites, the editor uses the matching reading style as well.
Vendix Newspaper Parts
Add a breaking news band and view counts with the Vendix plugin.
The theme opens places that the Vendix plugin's Newspaper module fills:
- Breaking news band: under the header or in the top bar, with headlines from the latest posts or from a page the editors write.
- View counts: in the post meta and on post cards.
- Banner zones: before and after the post text and around the header; see Banner & Ad Areas.
The band is not printed under a transparent header, and the reading progress bar stays visible over a banner band fixed at the top of the window.
A Practical Newsroom Setup
- Choose the News / Magazine site type in Customizer → Vendix.
- Create a Top Bar menu and turn on the top bar in Customizer → Vendix → News.
- Set the post list layout in Customizer → Vendix → Blog.
- Add banners or ads to the news widget areas and check a post on a phone.
Questions About News & Magazine
Do I need a news plugin for the top bar and related news?
No. The top bar, the published and updated times, the standfirst, related news and the reading progress bar come from the theme. The breaking news band and view counts need the Vendix plugin's Newspaper module.
Why is the top bar missing on some pages?
Pages with a transparent header lie over the top of the page, so the top bar and the breaking news band are left out there.
Can business sites use related posts and the progress bar?
Yes. They work on every site type; news sites have them on by default.
